Hi Barb, I'm new to the group but am very interested in all Putz houses. I was just telling Tom that I need to replace a small section of rafia fencing on my early coconut house and your instructions are brilliant. It looks fantastic and I can't wait to try it. Luckily I only need to do a few inches. My rafia though has darkened to almost an orangish tinge, might be hard to duplicate? Certainly don't want to be carrying the house to Michael's with me! This is great; thanks so much for the wonderful photo instructions. I'm looking forward to trying it (after the first of the year--I have to get things up and running for Christmas right now--somewhat behind.)
For matching colors, I would suggest mixing a couple of colors of craft paint to get the color you want (as close to the original as you can), then thinning the paint with a fair amount of water and submerging the whole raffia fence until it picks up the color. It shouldn't take long. And then let it dry on paper-towel covered newspaper (so you don't transfer the newspaper ink to the raffia or the raffia color to your surface). Good luck.

Maybe a tea bath for the raffia to get that orangey color going on?? Just a thought..

A tea bath sounds great, and much easier than messing with paint. Good thinking. I have some old raffia and I'll give it a try tonight. (The dying, not making the whole fence.)
