2022 PROJECT 2 - ELF, DEER, SLED AND YULE LOG

Greetings to all…

We’ve probably seen the theme of this decorative piece before…perhaps a Santa and deer pulling a tree, sleigh full of toys, candy or a Yule log…well, here’s another one…featuring an elf…

The base, sled and log are straight forward tasks…the time consuming parts of this project are the intricate cutting out and assembly of the deer, antlers and elf…follow that with some tedious painting of the elf…

Here are a few details of the parts…

1. ELF…two identical cardboard profile cutouts without arms…arms are two separate pieces glued to profiles…toothpick glued down the center line of the elf halves acts as temporary painting handle…then cut to length for mounting through seat and down into hole in base…the pointed end of another toothpick is glued on front edge of body to act as a leg spreader…

2. SLED…cardboard with two cradles and a matchstick brace…

3. LOG…cardboard tube wrapped with crumpled brown paper…coated with white glue and sprinkled with sawdust for bark-like texture…round cardboard caps cover each end…two randomly placed limbs are bamboo skewer wrapped same as log and glued in holes in log…

Make two disk of natural color card stock…draw spirals with black ballpoint pen…rub brown colored pencil over spirals and card stock to mimic the ends of a log…glue on after final painting of log…more about painting later…

4. DEER…made from a vintage pattern that forum member, Lynn, sent me…halves are glued together starting at head and along back…but not all the way down to stomach line…this is so legs can be spread to fit in slits in base…antlers are glued on each side of heads…

5. BASE…craft store foam board with cereal box cardboard on each side…edge banded with strip of cereal box cardboard…slit locations on pattern are approximate…check exact location against actual tabs you cut for sled and deer…hole for toothpick that supports elf should be directly under mounting hole in seat…

Hi everyone!! My elf is pulling a tree. I kept the sled pattern exactly as is, the tree fit nicely in the cut out half circles.

Gotta love those little spun cotton and craft stem elves...the mittens are a special touch...along with the holly sprig...
