This is an interesting story to accompany the etsy item. I have never heard of the Sunday paper patterns, and this sure looks like a modern, mass produced item to me. Windows are definitely die cut. Either way, the style of the house is pleasing and worth sharing.

i believe the cardboard house in question https://www.etsy.com/listing/462878102/ ... e_active_7 was "greatly inspired" by the all metal "villa" produced by lionel trains...see the picture below...

Hello all,

I am very interested in these houses, having recently acquired six of them in various colors and shapes. There are no marks on mine to help determine whether they are handmade or mass produced. The windows appear to be die cut, and the finish is a heavy gravel that is consistent on all of the houses. They are painted in very nice soft colors, and there is something really charming about them. I'm currently adding a couple of missing chimneys and replacing missing windows with crepe paper, which is the nearest thing I could find to replicate the original.

I'm going to try to attach a picture of the lot. I'm having fun with this and would appreciate any info if someone knows the history.

hope you'll share a few pix of the houses after you refurbish, etc...do you see any hints or clues inside the walls that indicate that they may have been on bases?...

Good morning Howard! The bottoms of the houses are just like the ones posted by DCrowe (whose first name escapes me, apologies!). The "base" of the house is actually a cardboard rectangle inserted up into the bottom of the building, and a rectangular shaped hole cut into the "base", into which a light would be inserted. All of the structures have that feature, and it was that, along with the window and door cutouts that made me realize that these buildings originated from the same place. Where that place actually is I have no idea! Will send some pix of the restored houses although as you know, nothing happens quickly around here!

since there is a base with a hole on each house...and none in the back...my feeling is that these were probably marketed as toy train/model railroad scenery houses...and...yes...i know how things don't happen quickly...not around here lately!...

These have been floating around on eBay for quite some time. It is my feeling they are some sort of kit house that you could purchase and assemble. Likely for early 1920's electric railroad trains. TKH
