Possible 1924 Putz church???

If you have an unusual piece that you have questions about, this is the place to post them. Photos are VERY welcome, though it helps if you reduce them to 800 wide before you upload them. If you can't reduce them yourself, post them anyway and I'll try to reduce them when I have time.

Possible 1924 Putz church???

Post by Clinton »

Greetings all,

Here's a church I acquired not too long ago. It looks quite old and very different from the ones I now own. It says "1924" on the bottom of it. Could this really be the said date? If so, it's probably the oldest putz I have in my entire collection. Any feedback on this one anybody? Thanks for your replies in advance!

Cheers,

Will

I bid on that one also and was curious about the 1924. The fence appears to be early because of the shape, but the padre seems newer. I thought maybe the cross and padre were added later because the building has characteristics of a house rather than a church. Does the oval stamp help date a house, as opposed to a round stamp? I'm new to this though and am just guessing, so I'm interested in hearing 'the experts' input.

I'm thinking that it's more likely a product ID or some such. My opinion only, but the cellophane windows imply that it's meant to be lit from the back, a technology that wasn't available to most of the public in 1924.

That said, it is CUTE AS A BUNNY! And having a padre on the lawn of what looks like a house instead of a church isn't all that common either. Nice find.

I noticed that Maria posted a pic of this 'house' on page 3 of Papa Ted's Sharing Place.

That is amazing. It is not the exact same house, but it is exactly the same design. Good eye and memory, Laurie.
