TEACHING WORKSHOPS & LECTURING GOLDEN GLOW CONVENTION 2019

Post by Pete R.Oehmen »

I know that the active members of Cardboard Christmas love building and/or repairing these little gems. Not all people that collect them have the skill to clean and fix them up. The interest was there so I volunteered to run a couple of workshops at The Golden Glow of Christmas convention in Lancaster, PA With the aide of my 2 assistants, my wife Becky and our very own Linda S., we showed our students some simple techniques that they could use to restore and clean their houses. I designed a kit that made it easy for them to work along side of my instruction. Now over 60 more people have joined the ranks of Glitter and Putz House enthusiasts. Pictured are 2 of my graduating classes in Putz Refurbishing 101 Two of the pictures are of the Convention's Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market). This was a chance to sell my wares. That's me with Linda. In the lecture and workshop I gave credit where credit was due. People now know who Tom Hull, Joyster, Linda S, Kathi Mac and Howard are. I shared some of your tricks and techniques.

I was lucky enough to attend the GG convention for a few days, and meet with Pete and Linda! I enjoyed Pete's lecture on the history of putz houses, and hanging out with Pete, his wife Becky, and Linda. The convention really is an education, and a place to see some of the best in antique Christmas. I always come away inspired!

One of these days I am going to go.

Pete, how did you do your repair class? Did people bring their own houses or did you make up a sample house for them? It's a great class for collectors, I'm sure.

Hello Lucy, The top photos of this thread show 2 of my classes. Please note the Putz Repair Kit that I created (in the picture above) The kit included a simple 1950's flat bottom putz house. Even after the classes I had some repair kits leftover and they got bought up at the Market. The feedback that my team and I received was extremely rewarding. I am being asked by the Pittsburgh and the Virginia conventions teams, 2020 and 2021, to do more workshops, lectures and displays in the Museum Room. They would like me to do an advanced workshop "Putz with Pete 102" LOL Made many new friends that love putz houses as much as we do. As a side note I think I driving up the cost of vintage putz houses. That's good if your selling and bad if you're buying. I'm guessing that there were over 200 people in attendance for my "The History of the Putz House" lecture? Here's a picture of the audience 15 minutes prior to my dissertation.
