Flat Iron Clock Tower

Hello All - Some of you know that Pete has made it possible for those of us that like to do repros to build our own Flat Iron Clock Tower. Steve (PutzinVT) posted his build from Pete's pattern earlier in the year and it was beautiful!

Anyway, I purchased the pattern from Pete last year and am finally getting around to doing the build. I can only hope my turns out as amazing and vintage-looking as Steve's!

Thought I would share a few pictures along the way. So far I have cut and assembled the pieces and have primed them. Im going to try something a bit different with this build. Historically I do the build in its entirety and then work on the surface finishes but always end up with some sort of mistakes and less than perfection - which is actually quite common on the original Japanese houses :). Anyway, for this one I am going to complete each component in it's entirety and then simply (I hope!) assemble the finished pieces. Posted below is one pic of most of the components and one pic of my initial experiments of trying to simulate the appropriate textures and colors for the finish. For me it's lots of trial and error! I will post more as the project moves along. (Sorry the pics aren't of the best quality)

John

Hello again - I've settled on the colors by painting the entire main section yellow and then using yellow and green sand to create the contrast. The base is yellow with a slight tint of green base covered with green sand. A pinch of crushed Micah was added for a bit of glitter effect.

Almost there! - applied some red paint over the primer, let it dry, put on a coat of modge podge and finally the coco on the wet modge podge.

Assembled the pieces and added the white coco! All done and on to the next project which I'm thinking may be the Nov 2003 HOM!

That a beautiful Flatiron building. It is wonderful. You did a great job on the colors and the snow. Everything. Really, this is a treasure.

John, what a wonderful piece, you have done a perfect reproduction.

How did you like making this in separate pieces and then assembling it?
